World fertility has halved since 1970, and the world still adds 78 million people a year

The World Bank puts world fertility at 2.20 births per woman in 2023, down from 4.84 in 1970 — less than half. Over the same half-century the number of people added each year barely moved: 78.0 million in 1971, a peak of 91.6 million in 1990, and 78.0 million again in 2024. The 2024 figure is the difference between two population totals, 8,140.9 million and 8,062.9 million, and it matches 1971 exactly at this precision even though the world of 1971 held 3,758.5 million people and fertility was more than twice as high.
World fertility has fallen by more than half since 1970, and the world added exactly as many people in 2024 as it did in 1971 — 78 million.
How can fertility halve while the additions stay the same?
Because the additions are a rate multiplied by a base, and the base more than doubled. In 1971 about 3,758.5 million people were alive; in 2024, 8,140.9 million. Halve the rate, double the base, and the yearly additions come out roughly where they started — 78.0 million then, 78.0 million now. Demographers call the mechanism population momentum: the people who will become parents over the next two decades are already born, so annual additions respond to fertility declines only after a long lag. Nothing in this page needs that theory, though. The two published series and one subtraction produce the whole finding.
When did the world add the most people?
1990, at 91.6 million — with fertility already down to 3.31, a third below its 1970 level. The peak year for the rate and the peak year for the additions are two decades apart, which is the lag made visible. Since 1990 the additions have drifted down, but slowly: the world has added between 65.7 and 91.6 million people every single year of the 54 charted here. There is no year in this series where the world added fewer than the population of France.
What happened around 2021?
The additions dipped to 65.7 million in 2021 — the lowest in the series — then rose again: 69.0 million in 2022, 74.4 million in 2023, 78.0 million in 2024. This page will not tell you why, because the input cannot: SP.POP.TOTL is a total, and its year-on-year change bundles births, deaths and the World Bank’s own revisions without separating them. The years coincide with the COVID-19 pandemic, and that observation is left as an observation. Recent years are also the most likely to be revised as census results arrive, so the right way to read the 2021–2024 upturn is as the current estimate, re-verified against the live series on a schedule rather than assumed stable.
Is world fertility below replacement now?
This page deliberately does not say so. The replacement threshold usually quoted, 2.1 births per woman, applies to populations with rich-country mortality; where more children die before adulthood, replacement is higher, and estimates of the global effective threshold sit closer to 2.2–2.3. World fertility at 2.20 is inside that band of uncertainty, so “below replacement” would be a claim the data cannot carry. “Less than half its 1970 level” is the claim the data carries exactly, and it is the one in the title.
Which number is the honest one to quote?
Both, together. Quote only the fertility collapse and a reader concludes population growth is over; quote only the 78 million and a reader concludes nothing has changed since 1971. Each number alone supports a conclusion the other refutes. That tension is not a flaw in the data — it is the finding, and it is why the chart plots the additions while the subtitle keeps the fertility rate beside it, where a crop cannot separate them.
What can’t this data tell you?
Anything about the future, and anything about causes. The fertility rate is a synthetic snapshot of one year’s behaviour, not a forecast; projections of when world population might peak belong to models this page does not use. The additions bundle births, deaths and migration-driven revisions into one number, so no line here can say why it moved. And both series are estimates that the World Bank revises — the most recent years most of all — which is why every cell on this page is re-verified against the live API rather than treated as settled history.
